Nokia 8 Sales video, covering some of the technical and material aspects of the designThe Nokia 2017 Portfolio, using CNC metal on every product from lowest to highest price.The nokia 8 was built around a new antenna concept which allowed us to almost completely hide the antenna lines from the rear view, and have a body entirely of metal. The copper and tempered steel finishes were created from scratch, working within the anodising factory at FoxconnThe Nokia 7 was one of the most compact devices we made, with 7 series aluminium sidewalls for strength, it featured a chemical etched 3d glass rear panel, which felt luxurious in hand.The Nokia 6 embodied the brand characteristics of being immensly rugged, highlighted by a generous border around the window adding extra protection. The components were carefully arranged to allow the edges to be as thin as possible, highlighted by diamond cutting to give a premium jewellery finish, whilst the product felt strong in the hand.The Nokia 6 also took the copper finish, heroed by the Nokia 8, which we adapted to matte allowing for the much lower price point.Nokia 5 took a more familiar, less agressive approach to the form, still in full CNC aluminium, and also using the same hidden antenna approach as Nokia 8Reducing the metal content allowed us to bring the Nokia 3 to lower price points. again we used finishes defined in the more premium products, and matched them with high tactility coating systems for the rear panels. We also took care to use stamped individual stainless letters to give the logo a precision feel.Nokia 2 formed the lowest price tier in this range, and came with one of the biggest batteries and an exceptionally good screen for the price point, making for very easy communication. By introducing a new process which combined die casting, cnc and injection moulding we were able to maintain the metal frame for the price point. Albiet without the diamond cutsThe second portfolio in 2018 aimed to be bolder and more vibrant, featuring new accent colours and finishes, as well as refreshing the hardware specifications.We wanted the Nokia 7 plus to offer best in class antenna reception, so we created a metal chassis with plastic integrated for optimal performance, and pioneered a new ceramic coating over the entire part, then diamond cutting back and anodising to give an on edge transition from ceramic to metal.Once coated it was impossible to see where the antennas were integrated. Seen here in the second colour way of matte black, with copper accents.Nokia 6.1 was overhauled to reduce deadbands, and improve the overall performance including camera. To integrate the larger camera we created a gentle transition in the CNC metal part, and introduced the diamond cut to achieve the bezel feature.Due to new antenna requirements the 2019 range transitioned to us more glass, as it allowed better performance, and was more optimal for cost. The metal CMD approach was maintained on the side walls. This range also saw the introduction of the notch - which actually was not a design intended feature.The Nokia 9 pureview required a number of new advancements. Firstly integrating teh 5 camera lenses came with many engineering and design challenges. We also needed to use a premium material for the rear, and elected for 3d glass due to the opportunitiy to thin the sides, and integrate the lenses. The finish was applied with a foil system to match our earlier defined tempered steel finish.The Nokia 8.2 took a simple approach of packaging components as tightly as possible and building on the CMD assets, applying the diamond cut similar to the 7 plus.Nokia 7.1 was one of our favourites as we felt the size of the device was good in the hand, and overall it had a good balance of price and performance. To allow us to get the value we adapted the CNC / diecast process from the earlier nokia 2 and added the diamond cuts.
